The Must-Have Features of a Winning Resume

The Must-Have Features of a Winning ResumeThe Must-Have Features of a Winning ResumeThe Must-Have Features of a Winning ResumeThe possibility or necessity for a career change can arise at any moment. New opportunities and new challenges could be around any corner. New priorities and new ambitions could also dawn within you So whether it be to seize your suddenly available dream position or avoid being a casualty of a failing company, its important that you be prepared to take action. That means making aya your resume is current, compelling, and ready to market you powerfully.Dont be caught off guard and miss out on an important opportunity just because your resume isnt up to date. Review your resume now and make sure it effectively represents you. Does it clearly and powerfully communicate the unique and valuable qualities you possess, and the direction you want to take your career? Or is it little more than a type-written application form?Should your resume need an upgrade and you opt to tackle this process on your own, be sure to incorporate the following must-have style and content elements of a winning resumeGo Easy on the EyesA resume thats difficult to read will likely remain unread. So, invite your reader to quickly and easily learn of your qualifications with a welldesigned document. Use an easy-to-read font and size it between 10 and 12pt. Resist the urge to overload the page with text, this can leave your reader feeling dazed. Employ an appropriate amount of white space by using comfortable margins (.5 to.75 inch) and paragraphs no longer than three to four lines. Dont be afraid to use sparingly and with strategy bolding, underlining, and centering of words and phrases to help guide your reader to what you want them to read.Focus, PeopleDoes your resume have a strategy? Can someone reading it tell exactly what position you are pursuing? Too many people write a generic resume that is more reflective of a career autobiography than the compelling mar keting document it should be. A powerful resume has a clear focus and showcases only experience and accomplishments relevant to that focus. So, eliminate or downplay extraneous experiences that are leid in line with your career goals and highlight skills, responsibilities, and accomplishments that do support these goals.Craft Your ProfileJust below your name and contact information, your resume should feature a Profile a powerfully-written, promotionallydriven, attention-grabbing summary of qualifications that showcase the unique value you bring to a company. It should make your job focus crystal clear and spotlight achievements and expertise relevant to that focus. Above all, it should compel an employer to read on to the Experience section, where the claims made in your Profile will be supported with specific information.Be Keyword-FriendlyKey words are an important tool for recruiters and hiring managers. They scan for key words and phrases that describe specific skills and area s of expertise in order to filter resumes that best match the criteria for the job they want to fill. For example, in the case of a CFO position, resumes would be scanned for key words such as budgeting, forecasting, and mainboard relations. For your resume to survive this scanning process, include key words throughout that reflect both the needs of the position you are pursuing and the skills you possess.Tell a StoryIn the Experience section, dont limit your account of past positions to a simple list of job titles, dates and responsibilities. A truly powerful resume guides your reader through your background, illuminating the reasons for your movement from one position to another and describing the challenges you faced when landing each job. For example, your move to your current job may have been the result of an internal promotion, or perhaps a referral from a former manager. A challenge you faced and accomplished may have been to turn around a failing project. Both of these ci rcumstances reflect positively on you and, as such, should be described.Amplify Your ExperienceEach past position that is relevant to the job youre seeking requires a brief explanation of what you were accountable for. However, I recommend resisting the urge to simply copy your old job descriptions A bulleted list of duties wont hold near as much weight as a short narrative describing the scope of your responsibility. For example, if you were a Sales Director, make sure your job narrative includes the number of sales managers reporting to you, the region you were accountable for, and the key accounts your team was challenged with penetrating. Dont simply tell your reader what you did offer enough detail to let him/her know the significance of what you did.Dont Be Afraid to BragStrongly-written accomplishments describing specific projects or actions you took that added value to your previous companies are the linchpin of a winning resume, for they truly demonstrate your unique contri bution to your previous jobs. So, reinforce the power of your job narratives by following each of them with a bulleted list of your greatest accomplishments. Be sure to start each accomplishment with a powerful action verb, i.e., Orchestrated, Pioneered, Leveraged, Spearheaded, etc., and quantify your statements where possible with measurable data. Above all, be brief and to the point.and Brag Some MoreIts possible that not all of your relevant experience, skills, or accomplishments have been gained on the job. Be sure to include any special training, speaking engagements or community activities that are pertinent to the job you are seeking. Do you have special technology or industry-specific skills? Have you attended any seminars, gained any certifications, or executed a special project through volunteer or professional association work? These should be noted in a special section, typically located near your Education.Take these elements to heart when updating your resume and make the hiring managers job even easier. Just by incorporating the eight musthave tips outlined above, youll surely stand apart from your competition.

How Conversion Tracking Can Improve Your Ad Campaign

How Conversion Tracking Can Improve Your Ad CampaignHow Conversion Tracking Can Improve Your Ad CampaignThe Google AdWords platform is a tremendously effective and cost-efficient way to promote your business if youre running your own ad campaign. From text and banner ads to video, search, and app ads, Google gives you the tools you need to spread the word about your business quickly and easily. Its one of the good advertising strategies for non-profits. Whichever ad type you choose to go with (and you may decide to stick to text ads only or a absatzwirtschaft mix of every kind of ad), you can reach a vast audience over a network of over 2 million websites and apps. But once your AdWords campaign is up and running, you cannot afford to just sit back and let it do its thing. By utilizing conversion tracking, you can turn a good campaign into a great one, bringing in more customers and vastly improving your ROI (Return on Investment). What Conversion Tracking Is In a nutshell, the A dWords conversion tracking tool is a powerful piece of software that lets you identify just how well your campaign is performing in specific areas. These include lead generation, download, email sign-ups, downloads, and more. Every business is different, and incentive to entice customers to conversion can mean different things to different business owners. For you, it could be as simple as creating an effective newsletter and having someone sign up for it. For someone else, it could mean making a purchase, calling a number, or downloading a PDF. Whats great about AdWords is that it lets you choose which customer actions you class as conversions, and then in just a few simple steps, you can track those conversions and tweak the campaign accordingly. How to Set up Conversion Tracking to Improve Your Ad It couldnt be easier. What you need to do it generate a small piece of HTML that you paste into the code for the webpage your site visits AFTER they have completed the process you c ount as a conversion. This could be the buchung confirmation page, a thank you page (either for ordering or downloading a newsletter), or any other page you have on your site that you would consider being a conversion. When the customer visits that page, the conversion code is activated, and a flurry of data is sent back to Google AdWords. Whats more, you can create a different conversion code for every page you want to track. How to Utilize Conversion Tracking Data This is the key to a successful campaign if you are an advertising manager. Once you have started to collect conversion tracking data, you can use it to make adjustments to your campaigns. You will need to let the conversion tracking data accumulate for at least a few weeks (unless you come out of the gate with an incredible amount of traffic). When you start to see a significant number of customers hitting the conversion code you placed on the site, you can find out how they arrived. For example, more specific keywo rds can vastly improve the conversion of your campaign, BUT it will result in less traffic. However, you want qualified leads, so the vague terms that brought them to your site wont be effective at converting. Lets look at the following four keywords WatchesVintage WatchesVintage Rolex WatchesVintage Mens Rolex Watches The first keyword is vast. In fact, it is going to be too vague and generic to lead to the kind of conversion you would want if you site sold high-end vintage watches. Someone wanting a $25 Casio will not convert. So, although you may get great traffic with the first result, youll get a more qualified and interested buyer with the fourth. You could go one step further and add in price points for the ad so that people know they will be forking out over $1,000 for any watch they buy. Again, you shouldnt worry about scaring away customers who cannot afford that anyway. Test Conversion Tracking to Improve More The conversion tracking Google has put in place helps you create targeted campaigns with measurable results. This is not unlike direct mail campaigns which used the split-test method to identify the best performing creative. So, test different ways of bringing customers to your site. Try negative keyword associations as well. If we continue the watches analogy, you could include words like cheap, bargain and sale as negative keywords. This will ensure even greater conversion by excluding prospects that are not in the market for high-end timepieces. With conversion tracking, you get to steer the marketing campaign accurately, making constant course corrections to improve ROI.

Your Job Shouldnt Be Fun Work All the Time - The Muse

Your Job Shouldnt Be Fun Work All the Time - The MuseYour Job Shouldnt Be Fun Work All the Time Recently, I had drinks with some friends and a few of their friends. Eager to get to know new people, I started chatting with one particular person about her job. Her responsibilities include riding boats with fishermen to regulate the environmental impact of their work. After browsing through gorgeous pictures of her daily travels, I couldnt help but exclaim, Your job looks like so much funWhen I told her what I do- which is mainly sit at a desk and write stuff- it suddenly felt a lot less cool and exciting. Saddled with that newfound distaste for my seemingly boring desk job, I quickly reminded myself of something important No job is fun all of the time. You may say, But Alyse, what about Netflix watchers or ice cream tasters? What about people who work on movie sets, in breweries, or for video game companies? To which Id respond, sure, those could be fun- Id have no reason to think otherw ise (hit me up when I change careers to work at Ben and Jerrys). But, you know whats far more likely? Theyre also hard work, like any other job.I have a friend who has in fact worked on a movie set. Hell be the first to tell you that seeing famous people up close and being part of a film coming to fruition is pretty thrilling, but hed also admit that his day-to-day work welches surprisingly uneventful. Your job can and should be a lot of things- fulfilling, energizing, rewarding, challenging- but it doesnt always have to be fun. And you shouldnt expect it to be.This isnt to say that you wont (or shouldnt) be happy in your career, or that you wont have exciting moments. Interviewing one of the first undocumented lawyers in NY state and turning our work area into a creepy carnival for our companys Halloween desk decorating competition were truly fun experiences Ive had on the job. My point is that your role isnt necessarily meant to be a 24/7 enjoyable experience- thats why you get a paycheck for doing it. Your job will never (and isnt meant to) inspire the same sense of glee that say, riding a roller coaster, watching a football game, or partying with your friends on a Friday night does. And think about it If riding roller coasters was your day job, wouldnt it eventually become less fun? Watching Netflix on the weekends can be a blast, but if it was an obligation five days a week, dont you think itd lose that appeal? When I reconnected with that friend of a friend at aleidher gathering, I asked her how her job was going. This time, I didnt immediately jump in to say something about how awesome her latest trip looked, and Im glad I didnt. Instead, I let her vent about some of the more frustrating parts of her role (see, even she has them) and we talked about her long-term plans.Remember, whats considered fun is different for everyone, and it exists both inside and outside the workplace. But its not a constant and ever-present force. Realistically, you cant enjoy yourself all of the time- no matter where you are or what youre doing. Ill end on this note Be OK with a career that isnt always fun. Focus on the things that matter more- cultivating the skills and interests you value, making change that means something to you, and interacting with people who make you feel good. Its this stuff that proves that your career is about way more than just having a good time.

Yes, attractive people really can earn more moneyYes, attractive people really can earn more moneySelf-Assessment Quiz True or FalseWhat I wore in college is okay to wear in my new role because I work in Silicon Valley and we have a relaxed dress code. TRUE / FALSEI look this way because I cant afford to buy nicer clothes. TRUE / FALSEI usually just roll out of bed and grab the first thing in my closet. TRUE / FALSEI prefer the less-is-more look when it comes to hair and makeup, so I dont wear any makeup. TRUE / FALSEI know Im going to get some hate mail for this post, but its my blog and my opinion, so lets get this cold, hard truth out of the way right off the bat. Attractive people earn an average of 3 percent to 4 percent more than people with below-average looks, according to Daniel Hamermesh in his bookBeauty Pays Why Attractive People Are MoreSuccessful(Princeton University Press, 2013).So what are you saying, Cheryl? Only pretty people get hired? Read that quote again, please . It didnt once mention the word pretty. It said attractive. And in my opinion, anyone and everyone can be attractive, if they take the time and pay attention to how they dress, act, and carry themselves. Why is this important? Did youreadthe quote? You can earn an average of 3 to 4%moreif you just spend some time caring about how you present yourself to the world. To me, thats the definition of attractive. And if how much you earn at the start of your career plays a critical role in how much you earn going forward, doesnt it only make sense to get as much as youre worth right from the start? If your looks can help with that, why not maximize them to your benefit?I know the world has changed Gone are the days when you were expected to show up wearing the saatkorn dark blue or black business suit for each and every job interview you went on. However, it does not hurt one iota to dress up for an interview. Even if youre applying for a tech position at the latest internet or social media companydu jourin Silicon Valley, or a hip retail establishment, it wont hurt you to show up for that first conversation looking like you care about personal hygiene and cleanliness, or that you know how to use a comb. No matter how smart you are. I stand firm on my assertion that you work better when you feel better about yourself. That includes your appearance. So if you answered TRUE to the quiz questions above, I encourage you to rethink your strategy for long-term success. Dress for success still means something. Hiring your First Startup Employee

Hiring yur First Startup EmployeeHiring your First Startup EmployeeHiring your First Startup Employee ConlanHiring your first employee is a big moment for any entrepreneur, whether its your first startup or your 10th. These insights will help things go smoothly.1. Start With the NumbersCheck your books to ensure that hiring your first startup employee wont crash your fledgling company. Youll need to consider how much you can reasonably afford in salaryand whether youll provide benefits, says Brandi Koskie, who has been involved in several tech and creative startups and is co-founder of Clover Partners, based in Denver and Oklahoma City. You may also consider offering startup equity for first employees. There will be other costs associated with hiring your first employee recruiting, payroll taxes, equipment and training all of which get your first startup employee up and running.2. Find Someone Who Shares Your VisionLook for an employee who wants to be a part of your business and who buys into your idea and dream, Koskie says. You want to find someone whos prepared to give a lot of themselves and their time for the job, knowing that the biggest tangible rewards may not come for years.Traits to look for include being a team player with strong collaboration skills and a sense of urgent curiosity, says Jessica Salans, co-founder of a startup publishing imprint, Coralstone Press, in wohlan Angeles. Youll need a savvy and alert team that can look for opportunities as the business forges its own path.3. Assess Candidates CarefullyHiring your first employee involves spending time with candidates, Koskie says, and its a good idea to take more time than an interview with your finalists. You may have time constraints for how soon you need to make a hire, but consider bringing potential new hires on in a contract capacity before you make the job offer, Koskie says. Consider giving them a paid one-off project. That way you can see how they work, Koskie says. Are they disrupt ive or are they contributing in a meaningful way? If you have concerns about their skills, you can put them to the test. You can start to see how they respond to pressure, or how above and beyond theyre willing to go. This is mutually beneficial, as they get to test the waters of their new employer, too.4. Look for a PartnerWhen hiring for first startup employee, look for someone whose strengths can complement their weaknesses, such as someone who can oversee operations while you sell.I always have a very clear idea of what that first employee will do, whether its development, marketing or just plain customer support, says Dean Levitt, founder of Teacup Analytics in Honolulu, Hawaii.Hiring them to fulfill tasks or a role that the founder currently does successfully but doesnt have enough time for is perfect. That means the founder can train, manage and judge the work accurately.5. Make Sure You Like ThemYour first startup employee will likely be someone youll work with all the time and it can be a big change. Look for someone whos easy to spend time with and who doesnt get on our nerves.I consider personality to be more important than expertise, Levitt says. Youll need to work closely together, so getting along is vital to keeping yourself motivated during the rough times.

5 Key Questions to Ask in Evaluating Candidates Resumes

5 Key Questions to Ask in Evaluating Candidates ResumesThe average corporate job opening receives 250 applications, according to Glassdoor, so HR professionals and recruiters in all environments must know how to effectively evaluate a candidates competency based on their resume. The process becomes even mora difficult when candidates submit resumes with vastly different formats and styles, adding an extra challenge to accurately comparing them against each other and selecting the right fit.Job seekers always put their best foot forward, but there are keys to reviewing resumes that help determine which applicants can truly provide long-term value to your organization. Here are five questions to ask in evaluating candidates resumes.1. Are they a doer or an achiever?Companies do notlage just want employees who fulfill a role by completing their assigned tasks day in and day out. Indeed, recruiters should aim to hire achievers who go above and beyond in their role and think beyond the scop e of their daily responsibilities. This quality manifests itself differently in each employee, but it usually involves creative thinking, surpassing professional objectives, or wearing numerous hats in the company. Do not only look for the salesperson who met their quota each month by executing the expected number of cold calls. Instead, search for the candidate who discovered more effective sales techniques and scripts and implemented them throughout his or her department, resulting in other gruppe members exceeding their sales goals as well.To maintain its edge in a competitive marketplace, businesses need employees who can effect positive change, no matter their position in the organizational hierarchy. Workers who have demonstrated that ability in the past are likely to do the same in their new environment.2. Do they have hard and soft skills? Some industries require more of a focus on hard skills over soft skills and vice versa. Recruiters searching for a software engineer would likely pay attention to applicants technical abilities, such as platforms, software, and programming languages, whereas a customer service position may demand strong communication skills and an ability to handle criticism. The best candidates display both types of strengths on their resumes, no matter the industry, though they certainly should highlight the ones most directly related to the position. This means recruiters should find instances of collaboration, team leadership, and creativity but also examples of software programs and skills that required technical training.Candidates who have mastered the technical side of their work and are equipped with the soft skills needed to succeed in the workplace add tremendous value to the company with their ability to serve on the frontlines as well as effectively collaborate with others and positively influence the companys direction.3. Have their responsibilities increased? The best predictor of future success is past success. In many ca ses, employees who excel in their current responsibilities are given opportunities to demonstrate their skills at the next level.Look for career progression that also shows ambition to contribute to the organization in a greater capacity. This connects with the idea of searching for candidates who are achievers and have the tendency to not only complete their assigned responsibilities but also think beyond their current role and how they can further the companys mission in new ways. This principle does not always mean promotions and a new title. An applicant could have maintained their same role but been entrusted with new responsibilities, such as serving as the lead on a project or being assigned to train new team members. These examples show the companys confidencein their employee, even though there welches no change of position.4. Are their accomplishments specific and measurable? An effective resume balances two key concepts that appear to contradict each other conciseness and d etail. As a recruiter viewing dozens of resumes, you do not have time to read three- or four-page resumes. In response, candidates work to convey their professional history in a way that demonstrates they have the required experience but also presents that information in a concise manner. That means you should look for accomplishments that are specific and measurable and can be translated into success for the company. Consider the following two statementsIncreased online sales through social media campaigns.Increased online sales for summer clothing category by 24% through launching Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages that engaged followers and announced promotions. The first statement leaves the reader with a number of questions. How much did sales increase by? 5 percent or 80 percent? Which platforms did they use? Why was the campaign effective in increasing sales? The second version answers these questions but still presents the accomplishment in a sharp and focused way.5. Do th ey come from a similar or different industry?Companies must decide whether to hire from within or outside the organization. Promoting a current team member ensures the person in the position knows the culture and the way the company operates, whereas hiring from the outside fills the role with someone who can bring both a new style of problem solving and the unique skills they have learned from another organization. This idea also applies to the industries candidates come from. Does the company want someone who has experience in their specific industry and knows how their expertise operates in that environment? On the other hand, could it benefit from an applicant who has the necessary skillset but understands how those principles apply in other environments? For example, does an insurance company hiring a new salesperson want someone who has direct experience selling insurance, or would they learn new techniques by hiring someone with a hintergrund in medical sales? Just as companies choose to hire from the inside or the outside, recruiters should consider the value of selecting candidates from a similar or different industry. These five questions provide recruiters an additional filter through which to view resumes and assists in drawing out the qualities needed for the position.HR professionals know firsthand the difficulty of determining the best candidates simply based off resumes, but using this guide during the review process can help narrow down the list of top candidates.About the AuthorJacob Clarke is a professional resume writer and has worked with more than 100 clients to perfect their resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles.
